It blooms later than eupatoriums and is a more true purple color. For me in Stow, MA, iron weed blooms with later asters and mums. I also enjoy the seed heads through winter and in Christmas arrangements.

A happy accident. Always looking for deer resistant plants since my large native garden in my front yard is frequented by deer every day. It’s frustrating and I’m in the process of planting more of what they don’t eat. One thing not mentioned: the seed heads of New York iron weed is stunning in Christmas floral arrangements. It looks like clusters of little silver flowers against evergreens. Everyone always asks: What is THAT? because it is so beautiful in a winter arrangement. (Nice summer accent too!)

The Mt. Cuba study shows that there are many exciting species – from the imposing Vernonia gigantea (up to 15 feet tall!) to the more compact ‘Plum Peachy’ with strikingly colored foliage. Particularly exciting: the verbena-flowered specialist Melissodes denticulatus, a bee friend that specifically depends on these plants. Definitely a genus that deserves more attention!
