That said (in case no other previous commentators have pointed this out) – some folks believe that there are actually two species of Prickly Pear that are native to the Northeast. In addition to Eastern Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifisa – the subject of this podcast) ,there is also Tufted Prickly Pear, Opuntia cespitosa (see, e.g., https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/553158-Opuntia-cespitosa and https://www.facebook.com/nativeplanttrust/posts/for-a-long-time-new-england-botanists-believed-that-eastern-prickly-pear-cactus-/10164051786665010/). The latter species’ yellow flowers have red throats, plus considerably longer spines, than O. humifisa. I have seen both species growing alongside each other on a barrier beach on Nantucket.

Was there a winner of the Jared Rosenbaum book? I could very well have missed it in the comments.
Thanks so much!
