I’d like to make it into a sunken garden and an extension of the shaded native woodland garden I put in all those years ago with the soil that came out of it. But calling what’s in the hole “soil” is hardly a good description. It has been covered all these years and there’s nothing but subsoil. How do I begin to rectify the dirt into garden planting soil? Is just compost the answer? Even after all my years of gardening I really don’t know where to begin.

I don’t know what the science is but it seems like it’s ll all headed in the same direction: to break down. So why not?

Very informative article. I have a question tho. I am collecting kitchen waste and veg scraps and all in closed 1gal containers for a couple of weeks (a month or so) then im mixing them with brown material (dried leaves, leaf mold..) directly into the compost bin.
Is it ok to start an anaerobic compost then continuing aerobically?
Id like ur feedback on that
Thanks!
