I have tried most everything.But I agree natural is best. I do use a bit of lime because of acidic leaves and such .And a lot of patients

When we moved to a retirement community here in ME seven years ago, I had to leave my 18-bed raised bed garden behind, so I made six (3’ X 4’) raised beds, plus four half whiskey barrels. I filled the beds with a good organic soil from a local producer, and every year spread organic compost plus leaves on top. This past summer I had a problem with early blight on the tomatoes, and the zucchini (first time I’d grown them in a whiskey barrel in augmented potting soil) didn’t do well at all, so we saved all our eggshells and after they were dry, I crushed them with a rolling pin. I spread them on the bed I will use for tomatoes next summer, and in the squash barrel. I also upped the amount of compost. Hope springs eternal!

I loved – and was relieved! – that he only tests soil every decade or so! LOL Whew! I can scratch that off my never-ending gardening to-do list!

And I like the idea of feeding the soil, rather than feeding the plants.
