You both do INCREDIBLY important work in raising people’s understanding, tolerance, and encouragement of the living things other than “us”, and sharing how rewarding it can be to have those plants and creatures in our lives…a form of contentment…a way of feeling that these are truly the important “beings” in life that can generate happiness rather than brutal territoriality and a desire (or careless way of living) that is rapidly eliminating all but ourselves and our pets.

I was just saying to my husband David this morning that I was glad the red squirrel was not an animal that I hated and wanted to shoot…that instead, I could shrug and smile if it damaged something of mine and blame myself for not giving it the things it needed to live such that it took something of mine my answer would be to improve its habitat and ability to survive, and be responsible for my things.

When I go out in the morning and see a pair of squirrels chasing each other around the snow with seeming reckless abandon, their presence and persuit of their on needs lifts my spirits so MUCH more than buying the latest “thing” or reading posts on social media. I am thankful for having learned that I love the plants and animals out there for simply existing. To me they are meaningful in countless ways that I can love them without expecting them to change the world, or make names for themselves.

Having that joy, means I am more forgiving of myself for existing, and more likely to just reflect on what humans are here for, anyway, while soaking in the moment.

I have poor eyesight and was getting discouraged during my bird outings because I could not ID the smaller details of the birds. I had given up on learning the migratory warblers.

Last spring I used Merlin Sound ID every morning when I fed the farm animals — had no idea that there were so many spring warblers moving through the area. What a delightful discovery — I challenged myself to learn their calls and songs and not just the warblers (although they are tough!). Now I know I have Parulas, for example, in the yard based on their call and will then seek them out with the binocs. It is pure joy!

I am in awe of Cornell’s Ornithology Department and thank them for all they do to make birding so much fun. It will enrich your life.

They love all the seeds that were left behind by the plants.
