Within walking distance were farm fields and along the roadsides wild asparagus grew, so every evening we’d go for a walk and gather the wild asparagus! Those rural gravel roads are paved now, and houses line them… Decades later I grow asparagus in my garden and learned to store the stalks on my kitchen countertop in a container with an inch or two of water. Now that is the way I see it displayed at the grocery store! Occasionally I still see wild asparagus out in the country, but not very often since roadsides get mowed regularly so the “ferns” do not survive to feed the roots. Going to have Alexandra’s roasted asparagus with balsamic vinegar for supper tonight! I will sprinkle it with [Penzey’s] Lemon Pepper before putting it to roast. It goes very nicely with asparagus!
